Fascinating, well researched facts about wheat and it’s effect on our health including how the wheat we eat today is so different from that our grandparents ate.

William Davis is a practising cardiologist in the US who has seen extraordinary results putting more than 2,000 of his patients on a wheat free diet.

I generally advocate a primal approach when it comes to eating plans, particularly to my clients who want to lose weight. Meals should rich in protein and good fat and lower in carbohydrate.

If you imagine our evolution spread out over a one year time span then the time we added grains to our diets would only be in the last 24 hours of that year. Now the consumption of grains such as breakfast cereals, bread, rice and pasta account for over 30% of our daily calorie intake. Basically for the majority of people we just can’t cope with the wheat based diet that most of the population consume. Just think about it -some wheat based cereal for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and off home in the evening to a large bowl of pasta. Add to that the quality of the grain is nothing like that of our ancestors (prior to the industrial revolution grains were hardly processed) and we wonder why so many people nowadays have digestive issues.

However life does sometimes get in the way and I usually recommend that as long as you stick to the primal rule 80% of the time then for the other 20% you can let go a little.

I eat a pretty healthy diet myself basing most of my meals on protein and vegetables with very little bread and pasta. I have noticed though that since christmas that 80/20 rule has slipped a little and I’m starting to get some digestive issues and the arthritis that I have in my fingers and knees has started to get more painful, not to mention the jeans getting tight. It’s time to take action!

A couple of days ago I decided to ditch the grains altogether for the next month and monitor the results. I’ll keep you posted how I get along and share with you my meal choices and improvements in health and weight loss along the way.

keep healthy
