What Is Nutritional Therapy And What Can I Expect
Nutritional Therapy is a science based, individual centred approach to healthcare. It uses nutritional, lifestyle based and related health sciences to promote optimal physiological, emotional, cognitive and physical function in each individual.
A key focus of nutritional therapy is supporting the homeostasis of the body and the factors that are key influences are diet and lifestyle.
At Surrey Nutrition Clinic we use the Functional Model to assess health. This means we take a holistic approach and look at the interactions between the different body systems together with a health and medical history, signs and symptoms and where applicable any test results. From this we aim to gain a more complete picture and identify the underlying cause of your health problems and address them using nutritional and lifestyle recommendations.
We aim to treat the underlying cause not just the symptoms of your health issues.
What to expect?
One to one consultations are designed to help you achieve your health goals and resolve any specific health issues.
Prior to the first consultation you will be sent a Health Questionnaire and 3 day food diary which we ask you to complete and bring with you to your appointment.
Your first consultation should last about 75 minutes
During this time many factors will be discussed in depth including your personal and family medical history, current health and symptoms, any medication or treatment you are currently receiving and your lifestyle and diet.
You will then receive an explanation about possible contributing factors to your health issues, the priorities as far as devising a suitable programme and a time frame for treatment.
We can then jointly agree on a programme you can follow which may help address these areas.
Each plan is tailored to the individual and you will take away with you a personalised strategy to follow along with a dietary plan and relevant handouts connected to your health condition. In addition we may recommend supplements (any supplements we recommend will be specific to your health needs and if you are taking any medications a check will be made for potential drug/nutrient interactions) and biochemical testing (often functional testing can help get to the root of a client’s health problems more quickly by identifying imbalances and nutrient deficiencies).. (The cost of supplements and tests are not included in the consultation fee)
Follow up appointments usually take place about 4-6 weeks later and last around 30-40 minutes. At this consultation we can discuss progress, the results of any laboratory tests and from this make any additions or alterations to your nutrition programme. The number of follow ups depends entirely on the complexity and severity of the client’s health needs and concerns.
